Businesses hit due to outbreak of COVID-19 virus pandemic

The current COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in an indefinite lockdown across the economies, has hit the best of businesses in the worst ways possible. The operational costs, workforce costs, and safety and handling charges have increased exponentially. This situation has accelerated the technology trends in services, payments, and deliveries. Artificial Intelligence will fully automate the future of delivery. One such technology trend that witnessed a boom is in the autonomous delivery robots delivering items ranging from groceries, meals, medicines, and parcels. These technologies if deployed on a large scale can help decrease the spread of the coronavirus, besides assisting the businesses to function normally.

Adoption of AI-powered delivery robots

Due to restriction on movement of people during lockdown and quarantines, delivery robots can play a crucial role in the society and business community. To avoid people-to-people contact at marketplaces, consumer buying underwent a dramatic shift. For consumers, the markets squeezed into their smartphones or laptops to buy essentials. The establishments, delivery companies, and restaurants realized the importance of the contactless delivery system, busy in establishing clear protocols to safeguard the sanitary condition of the delivered goods.

The pandemic made us feel the need for autonomous delivery robots, which were here for some time but were kept at bay for security or administration challenges.

Many start-ups across the globe are witnessing a massive demand for contactless delivery since the outbreak of the virus and prolonged lockdowns.

The goal of all the autonomous delivery robots is to deliver the distance from a local depot/store to the destination, also called as the “last mile” in the industry.

These autonomous delivery robots come in two forms- one as small bots sometimes carried in an autonomous delivery van which runs on sidewalks, navigate pavements, passes through doors, take stairs or elevators to reach its destination for delivery of the parcel, the second in the form of drones, which flies to the destination from the depot to customer doorstep or a balcony.

Benefits of autonomous delivery robots

All these delivery robots come equipped with

  • GPS pinpoints on a map to find the location of customers for dropping off the parcel,
  • Real-time location tracking both by the business and customers,
  • Identification of customers through passcodes, and
  • Contactless payment with an onboard card swapping systems.

These delivery robots help solve many of the “last mile” problems at it offers an efficient, quick, and inexpensive way to get the stuff whenever and wherever one needs it. These can also be utilized in offices, restaurants, malls, large corporate campuses, factories, etc.

The adoption of these autonomous delivery robots would likely face some challenges, including regulations in some countries such as road and air safety, traffic and pedestrian walkways usage rules, etc.

The pressing need would be a sufficient incentive for these hurdles to be addressed or cleared by the incumbent countries for ensuring that these autonomous delivery technologies reach and benefit the masses and adhere to the Social Distancing norms during and post-pandemic life.

Only time will reveal how fast the adoption of autonomous delivery robots takes place.

There is yet another angle to these technologies, creating wealth for the investor. Do get in touch with us for investing in one of these technologies.
